What is the best way to get those rubber 'grommets' that are used to keep the side covers on?

im sorry dude,but do you want new grommets or a better way to keep the side covers on.if you need new grommets Z1 has got them.if your looking for a better way to keep them on uuuummmmm dunno,get new grommets,what i do is tie some fine string on it so if it does blow off it dosent go far

New grommets are the ticket. I've seen various clips and wires used but the real problem is that the old grommets just get hard and don't do a good job of grommeting. New grommets are readily available as quader98 has already posted.

Definitely get new grommets!
If you want some added insurance do this.
Make sure to leave enough so you can get off a side cover but not enough to have it hit the road. There is room behind the tabs to spread the cotter pin and not mark up your sidecover. Use a small dia cotterpin with long legs.

Hi, your side cover problem could be fixed by wrapping electrical tape around the "nubs" of the side cover. it makes removal a little difficult, be careful and don't yank the side cover off and break it but the will stay on at speed. I did this to mine more than a few years ago and it has worked fine.

I found grommets at the local hardware store. They are thicker than OEM and the i.d. is a hair smaller; on my covers the posts are held tight, but also can not go all the way through the grommet hole. That might be a bad thing but I haven't had one shake or blow free yet.

I figured after losing a side cover from my Z1, what I would do is... SPEND THE MONEY AND BUY THE RIGHT ONES FROM JEFF @ Z-1!!!
Sure a heck of a lot cheaper than, new/used cover ( $45.00 ), new/used 900 DOHC insigna ( $37.50 ), NEW paint to match the bike( $125.00 ).
I tried the cheap hardware store route too. It worked up until I went somewhat over the posted speedlimit :whistle:
But that's me;)
