Very cool and it looks like you were able to save all the work you put into the paint as well. Bike looks great!

Rust never stops once it starts.

Yep, unless you strip it all the way out and seal it up dead tight. I used the Kreem urethane tank liner coating on mine back in 1982 and have never seen any rust since.

I used to do a lot of auto body work. It was a well known fact that the only cure for rust on a car was: sell the car.

Took it 30 miles away to Seattle and back. Daring is my middle name. (my other two names are Herschell and Pantybottom)

Intentionally ran it completely dry of the first gallon of gas (that I put in it out of the little plastic emergency can I used to fill it up with initially after completing the fix). Including tipping the bike to get the last few drops from the right side to the left over the hump in the tank.

Filled the tank being careful not to get any on the new clear coat paint.

Rode it, and rode it some more. Seems no trouble from the contaminated gas tank.

Just gotta replace the lamps and mirror and wait for the panel and tach cover (all on the right side) and I'll be completely fixed from the crash.

The scooter is safely back in the back yard, I'm officially free-way ready again.

You can use a mild solvent like mineral spirits to do wash rinses inside the tank. The upside is that it is a lot less active that gasoline and typically won't dissolve or discolor any decent quality paint that is dry.

rust in the tank aint so bad as long as it stays in the tank
if you have a screen on top of the petcock and a inline filter you should be ok
watch the inline for chunks, if you see some then do something drastic
but surface rust doesn't usually hurt anything

If it is only surface rust, just use CLR or vinegar to remove it. Flush tank with DESTILED water this will prevent any quick rust forming. Install your petcock and gas cap right away. Poor in one pint of 99% Isopropyl Alcohol which you can get at any Pharmacy and flush it out to remove the water. Mix one oz of "Sea Foam" with two oz of Rislone or Marvel Mystery Oil and one gal of gas inside the tank and shake it up. You should not have any problems after this. I Had the same problem after I painted my GPZ1100 tank because i washed the surface with Muriatic Acid. Once the vapors got inside the tank got a light rust patina. I did just what I told you and not had a problem. I also add one oz per gallon of Rislone and "Sea fFoam" to my fuel this prevents any possibility of future rusting. You can see my project here. the paint job is mine.

Just a quick side not for anyone planning on performing this feat in the future. Wheneve I clean out a tank I just grab a length of chain and throw it in there and shake it up. Its alot easier to pull out when your done and you don't have to keep searching for that last washer or nut. Normal chain works ok, but swingset chain works really well (You know that double link stuff from swingsets, Whats that stuff really called??).

I agree, GRAVEL is NOT a good idea. To have to resort to chain is only when there is thick rust buildup inside the tank. For just a thin surface rust as in this case, just a mild acid flush is enough. Followed by distilled water than by Alcohol (Isopropyl is highly recommended).

try electrolisis.... a solution of sodium carbonate (PH plus for pools) and water and a battery charger.... fill the tank with solution hook negative to petcock area or ground, put an electrode in filler hole of tank, the rust will come off the tank and stick to the positive electrode,I made the electrode from a bolt with several different size washers and a spray can top, dont let the electrode touch the tank, it should hang in the solution, this take time so you also need patience, keep the electrode clean, I have done a bunch of tanks this way,it will remove all the rust if you take your time and have patience
