Could you remind us, once again, which bike you ride?

I need to get used to the idea of paying 40 bucks for this eh?
I like the one you posted, but I"m pretty sure mine didn't say "SR" on it. Maybe mine was not original or just a slightly different model/market?

The seller might be a bit high but that price shouldn't scare you too much for a sidecover. Look at the prices he has for the other sidecovers he's selling. And you are correct, that is not a 1978 SR sidecover, it is from a later model. You may have had a sidecover with a different emblem attached because the 1978 model did have a small 'SR' below the 'KZ650' on the sidecover.

Looking at Kawasaki.com, it appears that the '78 650SR D1 uses sidcovers with badging like this (without the custom pinstripping or broken tab). They do appear on ebay from time to time, even though this one is the wrong side.

The one Ed shows is how they looked in 1978. The other one on ebay is how they looked in 1979.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Ed is right the side covers are different on the 78 and 79 models. In addition to the different badging the 78 has a moulded spot in the cover, kind of a recess that the emblem sits in, where the cover on the 79 is flat. You can occasionally get a deal on ebay, I just sniped one for my 79 SR for 13 or 14 bucks, but I had been looking for a long time.
Edit: I just saw an NOS set of the correct emblems for your bike on ebay item#160218682990 $9.00 to start no bids so far.

I've got the right side cover from a '78 KZ650-D(SR) that you can have for $10 + shipping.
It's the same cover with the emblem recess that The Gringo mentioned, but is missing the emblem itself.
I looked it over carefully and couldn't find any cracks or damage on it anywhere, and all three mountings tabs are still in perfect shape.
The PO of the bike this cover came from did a horribly pathetic repaint on it (which is now a faded red with light scratches/swirl marks), so it certainly couldn't hurt to give it a little "love" in the form of paint before mounting it on another bike.
Heck, repaint it to match your bike and score those emblems The Gringo posted the info for, and you're back in business again! :woohoo:
Shoot me your shipping info if you're interested and I can figure out what postage will be.

I realize you stated for ~ $50 but I'll reply just the same.
Americanclassix.com: ~ $89

I bought both side covers for my KZ900 project and the covers are extremely well made (thick & sturdy plastic)with reinforced pins.
