How much to have it painted?
09 Feb 2008 10:18
I am thinking of having my 1978 KZ650C painted. I don't know what color but it'd be a solid color nothing special. How much do you guys think it'll cost to have the tank and plastics painted? I work late usually so I haven't had time to call around.

I don't know what it would be in your area, but around here even "nothing special" is expensive. I got prices from $1200-1800 for tank and side covers. I did find a guy that paints for a car place, that said he'd do it for $400, using something from his left over paint. I ended up rattle-caning it.

When i painted my parts the material alone cost me $230.00. That included base color, white, blue and clear coat. Now you need to find someone to paint it for you for a few hundred bucks.

If you go with an autobody place, your choice of single color paint (for a pint)will run between $60-$100.
And that doesn't include thinner, primer, clear and everything else (including labor) that goes into a paint job.
I always wondered what a 2 color Mark Wing paint job would cost for a KZ650....

Keep in mind that even on small items the cost of a good paint job vs. "please tell me you didn't pay for that" is not in the paint, but rather in careful prep work and then the paint. And truly the materials are not cheap!

ouch, I must have got a real good deal then. Bought hot hues metallic purple and green. cost about $80 for 2 small cans. Then, brought the already primed and bondoed tank done by me to the local body shop. More of a specialty shop that does muscle cars and hot rods, so is usually a little higher priced. He did a two tone job withe the purple and green. He did an extra coat of primer ontop of mine, and had to lay down a silver metallic base coat to make the colors sparkle. Only cost me about $280 Here is a link to the paint job.

jordan, just checked out your paint job and left a comment.
That's a very nice looking bit of work. Good stuff.
BTW, I don't see a location in your signature, where in the KZR nation are you?
Best of success!

Wow this will cost more than I had expected. I think I read a how to on spray paint and it turned out nice so maybe I'll do that myself. You guys think it'd look good with the whole bike painted with the PJ1 black from Z1?

for this complete paint job which I did on my GPZ1100 I would charge about $2000. It would take about 3-4 weeks. As mentioned before it is not the paint but the prep work.
Here is the link .
