kz 1300 tank vs kz 1000 tank was created by stain
Does anyone have an 82-84 kz1000 tank they could give some dimensions of. Height and lenth in the middle.
The reason I ask is I am putting an ELR paint scheme on my KZ1300 and am trying to decide if I bought the sticker kit if the tank stripes would work or be to short. I know the tank is wider but I don't about height or lenth. Don't want to piss away $125!!

I can give you those dimensions tomorrow. But I can tell you that the 1300 tank is enormous in comparison to the GPZ/ELR tank.I have both but will not have the time to measure it today. I have the 79 tank and the 81/82 tank is even larger.

I borrowed an Ebay picture, one of my own tanks was to dark in color for a good picture.

I could take new measurements where the decals are exact on a Z1000R if you want.

If you want some other/better dimensions just say a word.:)
This is maximum in mm, not to the decals.

Red: 650mm
Blue: 230mm
Yellow: 240mm

Blue: 570mm
Red: 390mm

One thing I will tell you about the 1300 tank is that it is enormous. The hollow underneath is gargantuan. You would be much better off with a GPZ1100 tank. The mounts will fit on most KZ1000 frames the 1300 tank would take quite a lot to fit it is a good 3” wider at the widest point than the GPZ tank and they are both 21.5l the bigger tank being 27l this one came on the touring models and is even too big for the 1300.

Hold on a sec. I've put a '79 KZ1300 tank on my '81 GPz frame. This is what I've learned in the process:
1. GPz tanks do NOT mount on the frame the same way KZ1300 tanks do. The 1300 frame has tank mounting lugs located much lower and wider than the GPz frame.
2. The KZ1300 tunnel isn't that much bigger than the GPz1100's, maybe less than a quart in volume.
3. The 1300 tank is about 2" longer from steering neck to where the seat butts up against it. So if you deal with the change in mounting lugs, you'll still have a gap between your seat and the tank you'll have to deal with.
#4. The 1300 tank has a much wider V shape at the front where it fits down around the frame downtubes. I suspect that this is because the downtubes themselves form a wider V, but since the frame I have is a GPz1100 and I don't have a KZ1300 frame to compare it with, I can't say for sure, but I'd check it out if I were you.
I'll post pics of what I've done to do the opposite of what you want as soon as I can convince my 'puter to "see" my camera.

Guys, I think he just wants to make his 1300 tank on his 1300 look like an ELR, not mount a 1300 tank on a 1000.

I can't help you as far as dimensions but logically if the ELR tank is the same length as the 1300's the wider 1300 tank will result in a longer side panel due to the curvature arc being longer. For the kit to work the 1300 tank will have to be shorter by the increase in the length of the arc. Other factors would be any sculpting in the tanks contours. A decal will want to follow the contour and if the kit decal is cut for the contour of an ELR it may start to walk or wrinkle on you anyway.

My guess is you will need to find a decent painter to paint the way the decal would look on the bike, solves all these issues IMHO.

Well, actually I would be interested in how to make a 1300 tank fit on a 1000; so, for those of you with wisdom of experience: please share.

Thanks,

Once Again; The question is WHY?
The GPZ tank has the same volume and will fit right on the bike. I just tryed to fit my 1300 tank on my 1000 and it would take some work to do so.
