There have been numerous posts on Kz paint codes over the years and the simple fact is that Kawasaki does not have or will not disclose paint codes.

I spent one afternoon speaking to half a dozen Kawasaki (corporate) employees in Canada and the U.S. and they could not provide any information on paint codes for the Kz650. I was looking to match the 1977 Moondust Silver and was told it was a three step process. They could not even give me the silver top coat which was apparently sprayed over a white base coat.

Your best bet is to get your hands on an original set of bodywork and take it to an automotive paint shop and have them scan the paint to get a reasonable match. It is probably best to have them work with a painted area that would not have been exposed to the sun or elements. Under the tank or the tailpiece that is covered partially by the seat would probably have the best match.

BTW the 1978 blue is a gorgeous color and was nicely accented by the yellow and light blue pinstripes.

I've heard the same thing Reborn is saying. My bike is also what they called "Dark Luminous Blue", which is what they called it also in '78. Was not very popular but I love it. Will also need to match up color for replacement tank damaged in accident (unless I get lucky with nice same color on ebay) May have to paint "all" bodywork to get a perfect match. That would suck and be more $$$ than I have. Is this what your talking about? Good luck to both of us!!

Rob, came across this site (I'm sure there are many more) If you have a part (side panel?) that is not faded, etc, just send it in and they say thay can match it almost (no real guarantees of course) perfectly! No charge for this service, (you pay shipping to and from of course) They will give you a number and then you order the paint from the website! Worth a check?

Colin,

The 1978 Silver is a 3 coat process but the first coat is only a light grey or an off white base, kind of like a primer coat. This was done just because shooting the silver over the black plastic would come out darker than shooting it on a primered tank. The second coat is the silver and the last coat it the clear. So the silver is basicly a car type metallic color that your local auto paint supply store could computer match too.

I supplied the color charts for factory recommended touch up paint and they are on this site in the KZ Information filebase. They are easiest to locate by doing a file search using the keyword paint. They list the 1978 silver as a one coat color. Unfortunately they only list the 650 C and not the B colors.
