Side covers - keep falling off 1978 KZ650B was created by jdornski
Hi:
I am very bitter. Finaly took amy firstlong ride on my recently restored 1978 KZ650B. The left side cover fell off(fortunately found it on the return trip)and later on the right one almost did the same.
Is there a quick fix?
Or can someone tell me where I can get the rubber grommets that hold them in place.
The good news side of this is I can now justify a repaint back to 1978 colours.
thanks
JD

Z1 ENTERPRISES;) i always like to drill a little hole in top front corner and use a piece of chain like on a set of finger nail clippers looped around frame tube to hold it from flying off at high speeds, yes they will fly off even with new grommets.

i drill a small hole in the bottom lip on both sides and then attach a very small bungee cord holding both together. since i did that i have stopped reaching down every few miles to make sure they were still on

You can get new grommets as almost any hardware store. Not sure of the size but look for a store that has the midwest section, most hardwares do. You can find them there.

I never had them fall off with new grommets. A lot of guys pin them like the photo above shows. schnitz racing has the grommets in stock.

get ripping along at 100 plus with a set of k&ns on there and you will be shocked how much wind gets blowing up behind those side covers

Wierd, I have a 140 MPH dragbike and they don't fall off.... Must have an extra tight fitting set.
However, my strretbike they do fall off on but I haven't replaced the origional grommets yet. We will see what happens...
