High Temp black, not high temp enough

High Temp black, not high temp enough was created by cuddies
I sprayed the pipes on my 900 with the highest high temp black I could buy. It's that engine stuff. Anyways, it burned up, smoked, and flaked off within the first 20 seconds. Any ideas as to what to use?

Hi, see you are getting underway.

I don't think you are going to get very far with engine paint.

I did a search for exhaust temperature, and came up with this site:

monitor probes

Apparently exhaust gas temperature can run as high as 2200 degrees. At least the sensors are rated at that.

You are probably looking for header paint. "Duplicolor High Heat Paint" or "VHT Flameproof" are probably the easiest to find in Autopartstores, both are showing a header on the spraycan.

Don't mistake them for the engine enamel paint it goes to "only" 500 degrees.

+1 on the grill paint. Some of the supposed header paints aren't all they are cracked up to be especially on used parts.

I'm not following you on that one. What kind of oven/temperature are you talking about? I've never had to do that and it has worked well for me. I just warm the bike and shut it off a few times after painting just to avoid the smoke issue of new paint on headers.

Oh and be sure you use 220 grit to rough the surface and be sure it is clean of grease, etc. Like all paint the secret is in the prep.

The Krylon bbq grill paint is working for me, but it's only on being used on plastic. It seemed soft for a few days but it hardened as well as any other spray paint. I was going to black my exhaust with it too but maybe I need to look into the header paint instead.

As long as it is rated for a high enough temp it should be ok (grill paint that is). I used it on a few bikes . It smoked up , cured itself , and looked like the above pic. Im ok with the results.
