polishing compounds?

Ok, im working on a custom aluminum chaingurad for my drag bike and Im after the mirror finish:evil: so far I have wet sanded with the following grits of sandpaper: 180, 400, 800, 1500, 2000 Its looking good, but Im now out of my field of knowledge. I know i need to use some sort of polishing compound, maybe 2?:S to finish the job. I have some "turtle wax chrome polish and rust remover" that is slowly working to get the mirror shine to a small part of it, but it seems like its not working very fast or effectivly. am I using the right stuff? will this stuff work like i think it should if i get one of those polishing balls that you can fit on a drill? (i assume they are designed with wheels in mind)

Get'cherself a tub of that Turtle Wax *Polishing Compound* in the green and white tub - the number escapes me. The compound itself 'll be white - not the RED in the green tub - that's RUBBING compound.

Hit it with that until your newly-fixed wing threatens to fall off, then go back to the soupy Turtle Chrome goo. :lol:

thx PT! you would be suprised how well i have come up with ways to hold stuff braced up against one leg to take the stress of the shoulder:P which is coming around nicely too:) (still cant drive according to the surgeon tho:( )

I got lazy and used a mothers powerball with the polishing compound:P but i did the chrome polish by hand. I think it turned out pretty good. got a few cell phone pics:

You people and cell phones. Just kidding! When I see people on cell phones next to me on the road I rev it up real loud to interrupt the phone call, especially if they are driving stupid.

Hi, I used 1000 then 2000 then mothers alum.pollish w/ steel wook. Need to go over it one or two more times by hand, but i can see my reflection now

Scott - For the final polishing you need that old Canadian stand-by....Auto-Sol.

I have tried every type of polish and nothing delivers the final finish like Auto-Sol. I rub it in by hand until the cream turns black then I hit it with a lamb's wool polishing pad. Your aluminum will shine like chrome.

Does that stuff come in sample tubes?

Get a buffing wheel and use the jewelers rouge (red) compound or the (white) for the final finish. You can get the compounds at Ace hardware or Home Depot. For up keep there's nothing better than Wenol (the red tube). Try it, you will thank me. Haa.

I don't know much, but I do know polishing. I'm a polishing fool.
