My right side cover is faded bad and a member here has a perfect one. It's off a '79 KZ650 SR, mine is a "80 KZ650-F1, are the covers identical or is the SR different? Thanks

Not sure but if you check buykawasaki.com and navigate to the parts diagrams you could maybe tell if part numbers are the same....just a thought.....good luck.

Part numbers would be different because of colors. F models I think have the same covers as the B, C and D models. The badges would be different, and the early covers (77 & 78) would have indentations where the badges are, where as the later covers are flat, no indentations for badges.

Although I don't own any 650's, the D model (SR) sidecovers appear to most closely resemble the H model sidecovers. The F model sidecovers appear to be smaller. Someone will correct me if I'm mistaken:)

The SR has a slightly different shape to it. It's hard to tell by the Kawasaki part numbers if covers are the same or not because each different paint color carries a different part number and sometimes the part numbers aren't even close on identical bodywork with a different color. You'd think identical bodywork with a different color would simply have the same basic part number with a different dash number or letter or something at the end, but this is not the case. Sometimes is sometimes isn't. Your right cover has a part # 36001-5013-7Z, The identical cover in green has a part # 36001-1035-4U. Your Blue cover is identical 100% to the blue used on the 1978 KZ650B and the cover shape is the same as 1977-1979 KZ650B-C line, but not the SR.

And just for info I may not have made clear the SR although a slightly different shape will plug right into the frame of a KZ650B-C or F, but just look different. Also as already mentioned the blue sidecover originally used on the 1978 KZ650 B2 would have badge indentations for the smaller badges, where the 1980 F1 had no badge indentions. All replacement covers bought through Kawasaki will have no badge indentations. So in other words if you happened to find a perfect original 1978 KZ650B blue cover even though it has the right part number it would not work right most likely with the 1980 badges.

This is just a little FYI on the subject of side covers for the 650. I bought a 79 650 B with a nice paintjob that I wanted to use on my 77 650 C1 everything works fine except the rt side cover. Apparently the later B model rt side covers do not have the little notch formed in them to avoid hitting the rear master cylinder and the bottom peg will not plug into the grommet on the frame. I've since bought a used set of covers that I'm gonna have painted.

Bluemeanie is there any reason you can't just get your faded cover repainted?

Appearantly this is a 79 KZ650 SR,so I guess no bueno... Bike bandit, com has a new one in my color for $80.26, a little steep but I might go for it as I never come across my blue ones. Gringo, I've thought about getting it painted but trying to match a 26 year old color scheme worries me, plus I figure with painting, clear coating , etc it will probably cost as much if not more than the "new" cover. Thanks guys...

All good things come to those that wait!! Did my normal pilgrimage to ebay this morning and was really shocked to see almost mint condition tank, BOTH side covers, front and rear fenders, mirrors, etc off a 79 650 in dark luminencense blue!! These color parts are a lot harder to find than other colors. Gonna sledge hammer the piggy bank for some of these, hope other snippers don't want them as bad as I do!! Don't need the fenders but if anybody interested, they seem in almost mint condition w/ all brackets.
