I will be restoring my bike to as close to original as possible over the winter. My question is what is the best way to remove the pinstripes from the tank and duckbill? Can you just sand it off!? Thanks for your help!!

yes you can sand them off unless its aftermarket and their striping tape then you have to peel it and use an adhesive remover.
if its paint sanding them off is the best way to go. if you try to cut them out you cut the paint and then you have to sand it anyway.

If the stripes are not below the clear coat then the best way that i have found to get them off is to use a heat gun, a blow drier works in a bind. Other wise it's time to sand. If you do use a heat gun make sure you don't get your fingers, it hurts, not that I know from personal experience or anything:whistle:

gotta be real careful with a heat gun as to not crack the surrounding paint

I just took the pinstripes of a spare set I am getting ready to paint.
On the plastic tail piece you can just take a razor blade underneath the stripe and once you strip enough off to get ahold of it with your finger, it should pull off fairly easily, even if they are still in the factory clear.
I haven't done the tank yet, so I can't say about that.

Go to your local parts house they sell an eraser wheel for pinstripe removal, doesn't damage the surface. It has a threaded shaft for an air tool but I just put it into an electric drill. They run about 6.00 and save you alot of work and time. I used them at the body shop I worked at and could destripe an entire extended cab Chevy in about 10 minutes.
