What type of paint is on my bike was created by FireBurst
I am planning a repaint this winter and need to know what is on there.I think it is the original paint. There is a clear coat on it,fine grit sandpaper made white dust. How do I test the color below?

Kawasaki used acrylic lacquer in the '70s. It was a three-step process... base coat, color with metal flake, clear coat.
Lots of members have repainted, and others will jump in with advice, but I think new paints are more durable than the original, and also more resistant to gas. Lacquer is not legal in California anymore, so a 'professional' body shop or paint shop won't use it.

simply dab some water on the sanded area if you can visibly see white scratches through the water then you need to use a finer paper.
if your just going to reclear 240-300 grit should be fine C:\Documents and Settings\jne\Desktop\P1010092.JPG

I tried rubbing the paint with lacquer thinner but that had no effect. If it was a lacquer it should have come off on the rag. Or is that not how you would test for that.

If you are using laquer thinner make sure that you let it sit on there long enough.
