I found this info in the Clymer manual rather amusing: chapter 3 says to see chapter 8 for free play adjustment; chapter 8 says to see chapter 3 for free play adjustment.

22ft pounds really will not feel like much. and if it feels a bit tight now it should feel ok when you get the forks and wheel back on.

When I tightened my notched locknut, it was tight enough to let the complete front fork assembly gently flop from center to side under it's own weight, with just a light tap on the bar end to get it moving. I read that somewhere, maybe the Clymers manual.

I'm having the same issue right now. I'm not sure how tight to go and haven't been able to get a good answer in any other posts. I've never seen an adapter for the spanner nut and was hoping for some solid advice. I'll keep watching and hope that someone else chimes in.

I tighten by hand then keep tightening the stem nut till all slop is taken out. I rock the trees side to side and front to back to be sure there isn't any play. I try to get it tight enough for no play but it will fall to either side under it's own weight. If you can feel any tension in moving it side to side...you are too tight. Once "slop" is gone, tighten just a bit more.

1980 LTD (changed over the years), 1979 LTD (being rebuilt), 1977 KZ turbo and various KZ's in various states of build. KLX110

That sounds about right!! :blink:

I have read about the other guys tightening the stem until there is just a little bit of resistance, but I could never find out if that was just the triple tree or with the whole front end together. Than makes a very big difference. If the fork assembly (with fender, wheel, etc...) should swing side to side on it's own, the torque on the nut would make just the triple trees seem tight (with no other parts installed). Make sense?? I guess that's where I really need the clarification. I was also hoping someone might have a way of torquing it accurately, but I have never seen an adapter for that.

I do it with the front end on it. I grab the end of the fork legs and use them for leverage. You figure you will be riding it with the forks on it and with the added weight, they will put more stress on it also. You want to duplicate actual riding conditions the best you can. It doesn't take much leverage though. Just move it back and forth in different directions and feel for any looseness. If it's too loose, you will feel it. Once I have it where all the "slop" is taken out, I usually tighten it just a wee bit more.
