To Patton atf does pretty good against rust and it really cleans the same time plus it has a slower viscosity than WD40 but also manages to get into those small spaces in the chain. ATF is what I am using for my non o-ring chain right now

Howdy -- Long ago in a galaxy far away I was touring 400-600 mile days with a non-o-ring chain, Z1 loaded to the hilt, including seven gallons of gas (way back during the gas crisis), averaging about 100 miles between fill-ups and a good body stretch. So the proper 200 mile chain lube regimen came every other fill-up, twice, sometimes three times a day. Hot, tired and stiff, with no center stand and 100+ pounds of luggage, gear and gas all strapped on and bungied down. Find sufficient space on the concrete lot. Bend down to the filty gung encrusted rear end. Spray chain lube. Get up. Lift and push bike forward a foot or so. Bend down and spray. Repeat. Repeat. And keep repeating until all the chain is covered with fresh lube. Then step back and admire the six or seven foot long strip of black goo left behind for others to appreciate and enjoy. Wait another twenty minutes for the fresh lube to evaporate -- no way -- just mount up, haul a$$ and let it sling for the next 200 miles. Opting to go o-ring was not a difficult decision. Never regretted it and have never looked back. Not trying to change anybody's mind and wish every happiness to the non-o-ring guys. Incidentally, have always preferred chain over shaft -- but that's another chapter. Happy trails.
