Bike lift

Ok guys, I just bought a really nice bike jack. It has two removable/adjustable "rungs" and will lift a 1500 load up to 24 inches. Problem is the way the KZ pipes are run. I can either lift it by the pipes or I can rig a center piece and lift it by the engine block. Now I could be wrong, but it doesnt seem to be a good idea to lift the weight of this beast by letting it rest on the exhaust or the bottom of the motor, any thoughts?

MaddMaxx...you will crush your pipes if the jack supports the bike via the pipes...many folks use the engine to support the bike and that shouldn't be a problem. I usually remove the pipes to lift the bike (I have a Craftsman motorcycle lift) but each time you remove the pipes you may have to replace the exhaust gaskets or anneal them, at a minimum.

I bought the yellow Craftsman with the optional atv adapter. I have been doing dangerous stuff like giving it a 4X4 in the center to keep from pulling the exhaust. I will stop that. Thanks.

Are you putting a strap around the frame when you lift it? You should and if you do the bike should-should stay up.

Yeah but my concern was for the exhaust and motor itself. I just thought the weight was too great for either.

Yea I had the same problem with my new lift. I got a couple of peices of aluminum barstock(hardwood will work)and used hoseclamps to secure the aluminum spacers to the framerails then just jacked off of the spacers.I dont recommend you jack off of the oil pan or the exhaust.

Hey Barney,

i realize this is pretty old post but...

i just tried my new craftsman mc/atv lift today and found that i'm the last to learn about the exhaust pipe issue with this lift. my own fault, i should have checked the archives before i bought it...

i happened across your old post about securing bar stock to the frame with hose clamps and wondered if you could offer any additional info. size/lenght of the bar stock? where to attach them to the frame etc.

i'd hate to have to get rid of the lift. it seems like a nice unit...

any info you (or anyone for that matter) has would be greatly appreciated.

(novice rider, only my second summer, still pretty ignorant about a lot of this stuff etc.)

oh, '79 kz1000st for reference. thanks.
