if you're talking about what I think you are talking about, i just used a screwdriver and hammer. I think it might call for a spanner wrench though.

JMK...are you writing about the great big nut on the top of the triple tree (and I'm not talkin' about you either)? The one with the notches on the periphery? If you are, then use (like lifeliberty suggested) a pipe wrench (worked like a charm on my KZ1000).
