Today on my way home. While making a right turn from a stop. My handlebars stuck for just a fraction of a second. and was repeatable a few more times at speeds from 0 - 20. What do I neeed to do/check?

Bearings. Lubricate and adjust or replace with tapered bearings.

JUst in the process of replacing my KZ550 head bearings with tapered ones, so far they are easy and smooooth as silk!

My KZ550 used to do that and I thought it was the steering stem bearings, but after rerouting the clutch cable to eliminate it binding the problem was solved.

The fork lock may be stuck in it's 'spring loaded, ready to engage' position. Nasty, gummed up, and rusty but ready to pop into place any moment.

Whoa - that had to be a pretty scary feeling.
All the others have posted great things to look at, but I would just say to get it up on the centerstand (if you have one), jack up the front, and try to duplicate the stickiness... and watch and see if anything is obvious first... before you tear it all apart.

Yes it was a bit woriesome. Today I am going to replicate the issue. Hopefully it will be something simple. Thank you all for your input I greatly appreciate it.
