Air box stay on 1976 KZ 900
23 Mar 2026 09:17 - 23 Mar 2026 09:28
1976 KZ 900 A4
Previous owner removed airbox and installed air filtration pods. I purchased an airbox that I'll install soon. I plan on using g K&N RU-2600 filter in place of silencer. I also have to find an airbox stay.
Question: Does the back of the airbox just sit on top of the stay or is it somehow attached? Does the stay attach to frame utilizing the same bolts that hold the battery box ( hard to tell from Kawasaki.com parts diagram)? Has anyone fabricated an airbox stay?
Has anyone purchased parts from PowerSportsEast out of Bear Delaware?
Thanks

The pictures do not show both sides clearly, but it does not look too difficult to fabricate if you had to make one. I see the flat bracket with mount holes welded to a shallow "U" bracket that must just support the back of the air box.

Later:
The air box is supported by the stay. There doesn't appear to be any bolted connection. On the other end the stay is bolted to an angle that is spot welded to the front of the battery box. That angle is supported on a larger angle that spans the frame. Each of these three layers are separated from the others by rubber cushions. The total stack height will affect the support of the air box.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for your follow up. Kawasaki.com has parts diagrams for multiple systems on their bikes similar to this one. I couldn't tell if there was and attachment from the airbox to the stay. I found info on "search" that the airbox just sits on top of the stay to relieve stress on the airbox boots.

I was able to purchase a new airbox stay on Ebay for $19 plus $6 shipping. The stay attaches on top of the battery box grommets. The stay "springs" a little so the airbox is held in place at the rear with friction. It's nice to be restoring this 76 KZ to stock.
