kawasaki Fork Damper

Hi, i have a 1977 Kawasaki Z1000A1, not KZ i know, but can anyone give me advice on the fork damper, when i got the bike the front forks were off it, so i need to rebuild the forks as the fork seals have gone, i have new stanchions to go on it as well, on inspection one of the aluminium end caps has some wear/damage on it, can anyone tell me which way round the collar goes into the stanchion, as you can see in the photos the collar has a flat end and a tapered end so i dont know which way round it should be installed to then fit the circlip in to the bottom off the stanchion, something has obviously caused wear on the end cap an i suspect its because the forks have previously been re-built incorrectly by the previous owner, Photo 1 shows the large collar next to the circlip, photo 2 shows the taper and photo 3 the flat end.

Thanks
