FIRST POST Rear brake return spring installation

What’s up kz freaks,

I got a 78’ kz1000 I’ve been trying to figure out how to install the return spring for the rear brake pedal for a week and can’t figure it out from manual or anywhere online. I’m begging for help to get this installed to complete assembly of the exhaust and take it for a ride after a rebuild. I’ve attached a couple photos of how I have the spring positioned on the pedal to first confirm that’s correct as I dont see any other way. But cannot figure out where the square hook goes on the frame. There is no where on the frame that I see where it would hook?? I seen another thread on this but think it was outdated and still couldn’t determine where that end of the spring attaches to.

any help is greatly appreciated.

cheers

That's very similar to a Z1.

The squared end of the spring hooks in front of the lower (horizontal) edge of the tab the pivot shaft is welded to.  It's easiest to leave the small rounded hook off of the pedal.  Hook the squared end of spring under and in front of the horizontal portion of the tab while sliding the pedal over the pivot shaft part way, leaving yourself some room to work, then  rotate the pedal end of the spring enough to get the hook under the pedal, then slide the pedal the rest of the way onto the pivot shaft.  The spring is fairly stiff; you'll need a reasonably strong tool like thick needle nose pliers or stout spring hook.

Mama Kaw knew what she was talking about when she recommended a routine drop of oil lube on that pivot shaft.  By the looks of it, it wasn't far from the pedal seizing to the shaft.  Not an uncommon problem.

As Jim noted, hook rectangular side (inward) first. I can see you didn't push rounded part of spring off pedal first before disassembly, all those frame paint scratches. Also noteworthy. You have the "squared" type early spring. This is what came as original but they superseded the spring to round hook on both ends. The early "square" end of spring would fracture at the 90deg and fall off. Just a bit of trivia..
