Chain tight. Any chance of immediate damage?

I adjusted my chain a couple days ago.  When I rode to work today I noticed the chain had no slack despite having slack when I adjusted it several days ago.  I plan on resistance adjusting when I get home.  Can I limp home or do I run the risk of damage?  I can ride as slow as I need to.  Around 30-40mph.

It really depends on how tight you made it.
I don't imagine super tight?

When tightening the chain, you should turn the back wheel and find the tightest spot in the chain movement.
Here is where you judge your adjustments.
Usually an inch up and down movement is good.

I just tightened my chain not long ago.
I thought I could feel a little tight spot as the chain went around.
Oiled the chain today.
Will see/feel how it is tonight on a ride to Bike Night in Newmarket Ontario...

thanks for the advice.  the chain is very tight.  I'm not sure how it got that tight because I checked it after adjusting and torqueing the axle.  I had about what you recommend, 1 inch up and down.  It currently has no play.  I found a wrench at work that I can use to make the adjustment before I ride home so I don't subject it to further damage.  I'm mostly feeling frustrated about how this even happened.  I installed the chain new about a yr ago.

Bear in mind the tightest point is when you can draw a straight line through the sprocket bolt, swingarm pivot and axle (if you can double check it with someone sitting on the bike with it on the floor)

And adjustment should be made on a cold chain.

I made the adjustment with a cold chain and the bike sitting on the ground with no one sitting on the bike.  When I make this adjustment I will be sure to sit on the bike before finalizing the adjustment so I know its good.  Thanks for the tips.

I find when adjusting a chain with a very loose axle nut, the chain will be slightly tighter after the nut is tightened. I like tightening the axle nut to the point I can still move the axle with the adjuster bolt.
The recommended slack in the chain should be enough to compensate for the times the swingarm is at or passes through the sprocket bolt, swingarm pivot and axle alignment point. You can use a ratchet strap over the seat to get the swingarm to that alignment point and verify the chain still has some play, but it will be less spec. Do not adjust to spec at this point or the chain will be too loose.
