Z1 clutch cable tight
30 Jul 2025 13:31
Hello, Im restoring a Z1B and i believe I have routed the new clutch cable correctly, but when I turn the bars to the far right there seems to be excessive tension on the cable. Is this normal?

When you say "tight" do you mean to operate or the whole cable is being pulled tight ?

The whole cable is being pulled tight, but it operates fine. It seems like its binding against the frame when I turn full to the right.

I will wait for the Z1 experts to chime in but it sounds like the cable may be too short for the height of the handlebars you are using. Can you post a pic of the cable at the lower end where it runs to the linkage

Installation looks OK but turning the bars in either direction shouldn't pull on the cable. Is it an OEM cable? Are your bars stock?
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

I believe the bars are stock, its all after market. The bars will probably never be turned that far while riding, I just dont think it came that way originally. The cable is bent a bit at the lever adjuster. Not great. Do I have it routed correctly?

I can see from your last picture you have US high bars.
US bars are higher and use a longer clutch cable.
Euro bars are lower and use a shorter cable.
Euro cable on US bars will cause your problem.
Have a look through the cables at zpower and note they say high and low for the bars type and quote a length for each.
Then compare to what you have.

Cable should be routed under that frame member and comes up right by the neck. Also pay attention to the way the cable is coming from the sprocket cover. If you bought the cable from Z1Parts, Z1E, or motion pro it should fit. Or from any other source for that matter.

Before you buy another route it the proper way.and see what happens. Unless you bought it from overseas it probably is correct.
