Z1/Z2 OEM handlebars
04 May 2025 06:33
Greetings All...but this perhaps should be aimed at slmjim and Z1BEBE. I have a 1975 Z2A and am looking to replace the handlebars with a dimensionally OEM set of handlebars. There may have been handlebar swapping in the history of this motorcycle so I am unsure if my bars are original or are aftermarket. That said, does anyone have measurements on an original set of Z1 handlebars. I have purchased several sets of handlebars from reputable dealers and both were listed as stock Z1 bars...but neither resemble (different width and angle) the set that I just pulled off the Z2A..

Though not from a Z1 or Z2 I do have this info for the stock bars on a 650 B/C model that was posted in the past on the old kz650.info site. Thought it might provide more info on the subject.
Width 29.5" Rise 2" Pullback 5.5" Center Width 4.5"
Width - how wide they are.
Rise/Drop - how much they rise/drop above/below the handle bar mounts.
Pullback - how far back towards the rider the bar ends are from the handle bar mounts.
Center Width - how wide/long the straight part of the bar is in the center .

Been away from most interwebs stuff for a while & just saw this.
Is there a particular spec needed, or all dimensions / angles? Could be a daunting task...
We got no idea if the Z2 bars are the same dimensions for Japanese domestic use as the US-spec Z1 bars.
(EDIT: The Lovely Z1BEBE observes that John Brooke's latest book indicates same part #'s for both Z1 and Z2. He also mentions there were lower bars sold only in the EU market for the Z1-A & Z1-B, but hoses & cables 'had' to be replaced to use them. We really doubt they 'had' to be replaced, just suggested to ease routing.)
We don't have any loose Z1 bars, but will endeavor to measure bars mounted on a bike as closely as we can. Rise at the ends vs rise at the second bend compared to the plane of the clamps will be tricky, because the bars drop between the second bend and the tip. Tip-to-tip width is easy. Angles in degrees, not so much, especially while mounted.
Can you suggest a KISS set of measurements needed?

Thanks for the response...I was looking for info from someone with OEM Z1's. As I mentioned earlier, I am unsure if my handlebars are original to the Z2A or, as many folks have done in the past, swapped out for a different style. Two other sets I have purchased were sold to me as facsimile Z1 bars, but neither of them appear to be stock Z1 bars...or are certainly different than the set on the Z2A. My set has a linear length (measured with a string to follow the curvatures) of 35". The widest measurement between the two ends of the bar is 28". If you could measure the bars on any of your Z1's of these two parameters, it would give me an idea if I have OEM bars. The other bars I have purchased may be bars for a KZ1000A1 and a set of superbike-style bars...

I can offer you a Z1 handle bar that came with my bike 30 years ago.
I have no clue about the different size or shape of the Z1/Z2 handle bars.

Scirocco, those resemble Honda handlebars. They also had the wire thru bars but started earlier then Kawasaki did.

Scirocco...thanks for the offer, but I already have a decent set of bars for my Z2A, I am just trying to verify if mine are correct for original style bars.

As I said, at least that was my intention, I have no idea on what was or was not stock on Z2. Something I have been looking into recently is , not sure what to call it, is the way back machine data that is out there. Do not get me wrong I do not know much about it, but from what I have found and read, it appears that web pages from the past, that do not require a password of some sort, are out there. Can one find what one is looking for or not I do not know. But it sounds interesting. But what do I know?

Yeah, I realize digging into old on-line data can be misleading and confusing. Certainly it has been when looking for info on OEM style bars for my Z2A. Interestingly enough, Kawasaki supplied two different style bars for the Euro version of the Z1B but only one style handlebar for the North American Z1B. Theoretically, the Z1B is virtually identical architecturally to the Z2A but who knows what was installed in Japan, or even by the previous owner. The width supplied by you for the 650 bars is wider than what I currently have...and I still don't have a measurement for an original North American Z1B.

Haven't forgot about this. We have to move some bikes, swap meet bins & associated flotsam around to get to the handlebars in question. We'll do it before Memorial Day.
