Components Needed for Switching to Smaller Handlebars?

Hey, I'm kind of dumb and didn't plan very far ahead when I started switching the handlebars on my 1978 KZ1000 LTD. I'm in the process of replacing the stock cruiser-style bars with the " Supermoto Style / CB400F Replica " bars from Z1 enterprises. I already went as far as taking everything apart and rewiring the bar, only to notice that the brake and blinkers no longer fit and the throttle cables are too long.

So my question is, when changing to a shorter bar, how many components usually need to be changed with it? For example, if I got a new master cylinder, would I also need to change the stock brake line?

Has anybody here used the supermoto bars or something similar (1-3/4" rise, 4" pullback, 27-1/3" width), and if so, can you share which parts you used to make it work?

Thanks!

There is no simple answer since there are so many variables. That being said, the bike is showing you what needs to be changed. Based on the pictures, I'd say the throttle and clutch cables, brake hoses and the turn indicators at least.  You can buy custom length brake lines from several vendors, or buy the parts and make them yourself. The throttle and clutch cables are a bit more complicated, but doable. If there is no room for the turn indicators on the bars, different indicators and some fabricated mounts will be needed.

No matter what you decide, by all means replace those flexible brake hoses. All of them, front and back. They deteriorate with age and are supposed to be replaced on a regular schedule. Those look like originals and you do not want to bet your life on them. The same goes for all the seals inside the calipers.

I also installed flatter handlebars on my Z1000, both about 70 cm wide.
I used an aftermarket master cylinder for them. The upper brake line is custom-made to my specifications, about 30 cm long, with a 90° banjo connection at the top. See pictures.

The clutch cable and the throttle cables i left in stock lenght,( just with some other directions in their way), also the wires from the switches, ( overlenght i´ve putted in a loop under the tank)

Indicator lights mounting on a other place should not be a problem...

Hope it would help you...

Greetings, Joe

You should be able to use throttle cables and a clutch cable meant for a Z1R to replace the longer LTD items.  The Z1R had more of a “superbike” style handlebar so they’re shorter.

In my case the stock Z1 cables and wiring fit perfect. Only the brake lines come new to fit to the flat super bike handle bar.
In your case you should definitely change these old brake lines for safety reasons.

Thanks for the replies everyone, it sounds like I have a few parts to search for.

Right now I'm not sure how to determine the correct length of replacement brake line i need between the new master cylinder and the joint connecting other lines, or what fittings they'll need. In your experience, how do you guys estimate the distance of a non-standard line/cable you'll need before buying it?

You can use a length of vacuum or fuel line hose of similar diameter to test for the length and route of your replacement brake line. I recommend upgrading to braided stainless brake lines it will noticeably improve brake lever feel.
