KZ650 rear brake lever drum brake
10 Aug 2024 10:54 - 10 Aug 2024 11:09
Hi guys
Have a problem with my rear brake lever.
Cannot adjust the pedal to reach it comfortable with my leg. It seems like it is bent or wrong because it touches the screw head from the food rest.
Are there different versions out there or what could be the problem?
See the picture: Until I try to adjust the pedal higher, it touches the screw (red marked).
So clear mentioned: If you look sideward on the bike, the pedal from the brake is below the food rest. This makes braking not nice.
Hope you understand what I mean.

The bracket with the threaded hole in it just above the two blue veticle lines on your picture should have an inverted bolt in it with a lock nut under the bracket.
You can see the witness marks where it was hitting the brake lever to stop it raising to far.
You are missing the bolt and lock nut.

I'm no 650 expert but from what I can see there appears to be an adjustable pedal stop bolt missing (green arrow) and a return spring (blue arrow) with cafe style bars I would expect the pedal to rest lower than the footpeg as this would be the best position (IMHO)

Re: KZ650 rear brake lever drum brake
10 Aug 2024 13:10Sorry guys for confusing you.
Set screw and bolts are there. First picture was taken during testing different things.
See both attached pictures which are showing current situation.
Second picture shows the problem.
The red line marks where in my opinion the pedal should be. Green shows the difference.
As mentioned, for my opinion the pedal is too low. Maybe wrong pedal or bent.
It is impossible to adjust it higher because contact to the foot rest screw.
Hope now it’s clear.
Thanks!

Have you checked a part diagram (Partzilla, CMNSL etc) to see if there is a spacer missing from behind the pedal ??

1. adjust the pedal to where you want it using the set screw and lock it off.
2. Adjust the nut on the drum arm puller rod to set the lever travel and required shoe movement to actuate the brake.
Or am I not understanding your question??

The problem is that I cannot rise more the pedal because of foot rest screw is touching pedal.
See picture.
Are you able to show me how high your pedal is?

Ah, OK now I understand. The lever arm will not rise sufficiently because it hits the footrest mount bolt?
If that's the problem you brake lever arm is bent inwards towards the engine.
Has the bike been crashed on that side?
Are there any scuffs on the outside edge of the pedal to show its been done the road.? Remember the foot rests fold up so if it has been in a slide the brake pedal lever is the part that will take the impact.
Here's a pic of mine to try and show how much clearance there should be between the pedal arm and footrest mount bolt.

From what I understand the pedal is catching the mounting bolt for the footrest (not by much by the look of it) so I guess that either you are trying to set it higher than intended or it is slightly bent. It looks to me like with a little heat you could gain the clearance you are looking for

Thanks Wooki and Warren.
Ok, now I am sure that the arm is bent. Maybe from previous owner.
However, have tried to bend it back but it is Super stiff and it moves 0.
Will try something with heat in the winter time.
Thanks again and greetings!

According to the FSM the peddle was not intended to be even with the top of the foot rest and unless you bend it I do not think it will come up to that level without hitting as it does not.
