Rear brake pads replacement
12 Feb 2024 10:02
Hello,
Because i have to remove the rear wheel i replace the rear pads that are worn.
The old ones was easy to remove because slim but i can't add the new ones that are too wide.
That's the good parts.
I didn't find any informations on how to do for a kz1000 ltd 78.
Can you help me ?
Thank you

Take the Rear master cap off and wrap a couple rags around it and use a C-Clamp to retract the caliper piston should give you the room you need. Removing the cap relieves the pressure caused by fluid flowing backwards. The shop rags will catch the overflow.
Are you asking for the process to replace rear pads on your LTD?

It’s basically a front rotor mounted in the rear. The inner pad is captured into the caliper via a screw through a disc into the steel backer of the pad. The outer pad floats inside the caliper bracket. Before removing the rear wheel reach through the spokes and break the Philips screw loose. Remove the wheel. Remove the Philips screw and disc completely. Push the caliper in (toward chain) it will slide on the caliper bolts and you will have room to remove the inner pad. Then the outer pad should have room to be slide away from the piston, out of the caliper bracket and become free of the bracket. If the caliper won’t slide on the slider bolts then it will need to be disassembled and serviced.

Here is the inner pad. The tab indexes into a slot in the caliper. First photo shows the disc and screw (broken) that retained the inner pad. Second photo shows pad installed into restored caliper front (rear 77-78 LTD is similar)

Ok so i'm a good candidate for a rebuilt i think...
I was able to add the 2 pads but can't have enough space for the wheel disk. Missing 4mm.
I think that the piston don't have a full play. I can see some rust on the piston.

The piston should retract into the caliper till it is flush with dust boot.
