Steering head race driver for KZ1000J models was created by Jonas_Z1000j
Hi,
Does anyone know if the Motion Pro steering head race driver fits the KZ1000J models?

www.motionpro.com/product/08-0550

The outer diameter of the races is 47mm and 52mm, Im not sure what the measurements refer to on the tool though?

thanks

/Jonas

I have that tool. Installed 3-4 sets. It’s not quite a perfect fit to the race. The 51-52 fits ok for the bottom race. The smaller upper race drive isn’t really the correct size. I make it work by driving the race in with the back flange of the 47-48 driver. Kit number 22-2014. Now this is for the ‘73 to 80 Z1-Kz frames. Your J might be different.

My 750 have taper roller bearing. Black one is the Kawasaki tool I bought when I was in 20's. But I now use the one in the red case. Bearing driver is some kind of Aluminum, so race does not get scratched. I usually use one size smaller driver so it does not make any contact with inner race surface but big enough to contact outside race. If that's not the right size, I use the Kawasaki tool.

82' KZ750-R1 cafe racer style. Clip-on, Rear set, Fork-Brace, Mikuni Flat-slide (forgot the size), Kerker.
84' GPz750 (basket case). everything are in pieces.
89' ZX750-H1 (ZX-7 Ninja). Resurrection project are on going with my KZ750. Everything is stock.

    Thanks for the input!

Based on your answers and the fact that the Motion Pro kit is not a perfect fit, a tapered driver does not seem that necessary? maybe just push them in with a piece of plank then the last push with one of the old races? That and heat/cold to make it easier?

I will have a go tomorrow!

You can try different sizes of pvc pipe also. Take a race wit ya to the local hardware and look for pipe this same OD. Using the old race is cool. Just don’t drive it in to deep, it will get stuck.

When you use an old bearing race cut the race on one side so it doesn't stick in the bore.

I just tried this and it went fine (I think). Races in the freezer, heated the stem with a heat gun, then used an oak plank between the race and the mallet. For the lower race I finished by using the old race cut open as Kelly suggested.

The last part of this installation, installing the lower bearing on the column. I was thinking heating it in the oven to 300 C then just dropping it on basically (and have a pipe ready if I need to use the mallet again). Any thoughts on that?

There are 2 seal the go on first the the bearing. I wouldn’t heat the stem or bearing. Your likely damage the seals. The drive on pretty easy. Again, pvc pipe is your friend

    Hello,

I used a PVC pipe as suggested and also heated the bearing moderately. It went on fine!

    thanks for all the help,

    /Jonas
