1977 KZ1000A rear master cylinder
20 Oct 2022 17:45
I’m in need of a new master cylinder for the rear. Anyone knows of any that will interchange with the factory one? I found some on eBay but I’m not sure if they would work, even though it says they will. The original one is too bad to be fixed. Anyway thanks.

A tad expensive but the rear OEM master is still available on the used market. The piston with cup is still available at around $90-100. And the primary cup, stopper washer, cir clip, and dust boot are available.

I’m taking a chance on a eBay one. I’ve done a lot stupider things for a bunch more money. I’ll post if it works.

Used units on ebay are stupid expensive. And you have no idea if the cylinder bore is clean, and free of pitting, before ordering.
There are companies that will sleeve a master. They used to cost about $100, but it's been awhile since I checked.
And of course, if this bike is a rider, instead of a restoration, you could always perform a conversion with a new master. That's what I'd do.

I have been using Kawi modern masters (2010 and up) off Ebay only if they came off a running bike and they were "wet", out of four units one was a dud - you take your chances. They are cheaper than the rebuild seal kits the sell for them. I believe the Vulcan unit was 14mm.

24 Oct 2022 14:00 - 24 Oct 2022 14:02Yes, I think it was a 2008 VN1600, should have 14mm on the casting.Interesting. I never thought about a Vulcan unit.
I am always trying to stick with used OEM as you can find seal kits, that made in China stuff looks close, but getting parts in the future might not be so great.
KZ650/750 came with 14mm and KZ900/1000 came with 5/8, but I think there is not much difference in the two as far as brake pressure. The brake systems look identical except that sizing difference, not sure about the different brake cylinder sizes for the ratios.
