Advice On Pricing Early Z1 Brake Caliper
19 Apr 2022 06:07
I take it these are pretty rare with the factory red inlay? This has been in my parts stash for over 35 years, what's a fair price to put on this? It appears to be in very good condition. Thanks for any input!

They are not mentioned in John Brookes book. I have never seen one either, but I did find a photo on the Internet with the red insert. Possibly an aftermarket dress-up item?

Red is the majority primary pigment in the make up of black. Sun will bleach out all the colours that make up black. Red being the majority pigment will be the last to bleach. Water based printing ink reacts totally different to Sun light than oil based paint.

Re: Advice On Pricing Early Z1 Brake Caliper
19 Apr 2022 13:20I have seen a few for sale on ebay (with road rash) and that's why I ask here, I really don't think it's aftermarket because they all look the same. If so it's a very good replica.

Oh I understand what you're saying but some of the high end auctions like Mecum and Vegas show this same caliper with the same insert. Thanks for all the info!

Do the main bolts have a star indent a the end of the hex head? If so they are Z1. If not they are Z1A or B. It looks to be in very good condition though. Has it been repainted?

Red insert is good! As factory oem. Later style bolts, not early 73, no blanchard star machine marks inside. And Allen bolts were painted? Is piston free?
Still nice for the Z1 restorer's.

The inserts were black when new. Red is the patina of age.
