seat lock key lost, how do I get seat off? was created by 55xman
I just purchased a 1980 KZ650CSR that has no keys and I need to get the seat off to install a new battery and remove the lock for re-kaying. I can't see any access to unlock the seat lock. Any advice?
Thanks!!!

the ignition switch should have the key code stamped into it. hopefully it & the seat lock are original to the bike. or the helmet lock, not sure if it's removable without raising the seat. also the 650csr would be an 81 model. or 82 or 83.

The Key# is stamp on the lock cover and ignition switch housing. Any good lock smith can make a new key with the key#

If you get the key code, you might be able to find a used set on eBay. There is also a seller on ebay who will cut you a new one for $15. I'd post the link, but this forum does not do ebay well.

You can't access the hinge bolts or the lock barrel bolt when the seat is down and locked. The only way to raise the seat without a key is to cut the seat cover off, remove the foam revealing the nuts for the seat lock clasp on the seat base. You would only do that if the cover was wrecked or you wanted to recover it.
Sometimes the key on the ignition does not match the seat lock.
If the key number is not on the face of the lock cylinder, you can read it with a mechanics mirror on the body of the lock cylinder.

They are wafer locks. Pretty easy to pick.
