rear tire
06 Nov 2021 11:15
good afternoon guys, i have a quick general question about rear tire size. i have a 140/90-16 continental on now, but would like a tire with a lower aspect ratio. does anyone know if a 150/80-16 would fit in a stock '78 kz 1000 swingarm? there does'nt seem to be any 140/80-16 out there.
thanks and i enjoy this site and have learned alot about maintaining this old bike.

MT90 = 130/90 width
A 150 section width tire is much wider, too wide for the wheel.
If you want something wider than a 130 then get a 140/90. There are lots of options. I wouldn't go 150 though.

Stock swing arm, NO! 150 too wide. I lengthened a stock swing arm 4 ", wider at the rear to fit a 150 on a 4" wide hog wheel. Wait till I die! My kids will sell it for $5 bucks at my estate sale

How low do you want to go? There are plenty of 140/70-16 tires available.

Re: rear tire
06 Nov 2021 14:41You say you want a "lower aspect ratio". Does that mean you want a tire with a shorter side wall? Are you looking for a tire with smaller diameter, or you just want one that doesn't look so fat?i have a 140/90-16 continental on now, but would like a tire with a lower aspect ratio. does anyone know if a 150/80-16 would fit in a stock '78 kz 1000 swingarm? there does'nt seem to be any 140/80-16 out there.
I looked around a bit and you're right. I don't really see any other aspect ratio options in a 130 or 140, although Avon does make a 120/80-16. And it seems pretty likely that 150 just won't fit.
But just to make sure the sizing is clear, the first number is the tire width in millimeters and the second number is the side wall height as a percentage of the width. Using 140/90 as an example, the tire would be 140mm wide and 90% of 140 tall, or 140*0.9=126mm tall.
Tires almost never perfectly match the "tire size" written on the side, but assuming ideal sizing here is the sidewall height of the tires mentioned.
120/80 = 96mm sidewall
130/90 = 117mm sidewall
140/90 = 126mm sidewall
150/80 = 120mm sidewall
So if you're looking for a shorter sidewall or smaller overall diameter, the 130 or 120 would be lower than the 140.

06 Nov 2021 14:44 - 06 Nov 2021 14:45I was looking at a bunch of popular brands and I didn't find any. Searching for that size specifically turns up a lot of scooter tires, which may not have the correct load or speed rating. How low do you want to go? There are plenty of 140/70-16 tires available.
I guess it's pretty likely someone makes one, but it may not be the best tire.

Re: rear tire
06 Nov 2021 16:06All tires have slightly different rolling radii, the "120" , "130", "140" are tire widths, the 60/70/80/90 are the side wall aspect ratio's/ height, that's the important measurement here... A 140/70 is lower than a 140/90 for instance....You say you want a "lower aspect ratio".

Thanks guys for all the feedback. I was looking for a tire that would set a little lower for the saddle height. I want to keep the 140 width so I’ll stick with the 140/90-16 . I appreciate all your replies on the subject

Re: rear tire
06 Nov 2021 19:39That specific size has a speed rating of "P", which is 93 mph. Most of the other k671 sizes listed are H rated, 130mph. Seems like the 140/70-16 might be intended for a scooter.Kenda k671 is available in a 140/70-16

The info on Kenda tire contradicts its self. The description states speed rating H 130mph, but the spec sheet says P.

In the question below the listing a guy is asking if the K671- 140/70-16 would work on an 08 HD. The tech that responded made a comment that it was a P speed rating. Not that it would not work. So if it would handle the weight of a cruiser and that’s the size he wants he’d just have to make a compromise. Before I’d do anything though I’d call kenda or a well know tire shop.
