81 Gpz 550 seat modification was created by Ant_5445
Hi everyone, got a couple questions. I'm trying to modify my 81 gpz550 seat to look like an ELR seat. I'm just wondering what would be the best way to go about this? I'm thinking of using the original seat foam, cutting and shaping it, and getting a replacement cover. However, i haven't seen to many replacement seat foams for this bike so if i were to ever go back i wouldn't be able to. I have been seeing a lot of seats for 82-83 550s around on ebay...are these the same foams used in the 81 or completely different? They look like the same length and width so maybe i could buy one cheap , cut into that instead while using the 81 pan, and use a replacement cover? Any other suggestions? Thanks!!

I see this thread is a couple months old, but if you haven't done it yet, 82-83 are different. I haven't see any replacement foam for a 550. The 80-83 A model 550 a similar foam, but not the same. It's a little thinner (in height), and not quite the same quality, but may work perfectly for what you want to do. If you're in the USA, and still need something to work with, I may have a foam that will work for you

Thanks for the reply. I just ended up cutting into the original foam and put a new cover on it. Works perfect and its actually comfortable..not as bad as i thought it would be.

1st pic was before.
2nd pic was cutting the foam and mocking it up on the bike. All i did was follow the first indentation up to the higher part of the back of the seat. I took 2 inches off.
3rd pic is when it was finished.
Bought a new seat cover while i was at it at Z1. However, the cover was pre fit to the original foam so it didn't conform right. Had to take that to an upholstery shop as i didn't feel comfortable taking the stitches out and end up ruining the seat cover. Makes a hell of a difference when riding alone and even 2 up...not sliding everywhere.
