Chain and sprockets
11 May 2020 10:50
Hey guys, anyone know where I can order the chain and sprockets for a 83 kz650 csr? Its a 630 chain with a 13t front and a 33t rear.

Z1Enterprises.com probably has what you need. You could switch to a 530 chain & sprockets. I think that's what a lot of guys do who have a 630 chain.

530 for sure.
EDIT : fixed earlier mistake...
16T front
40T rear
102 link chain (the calculation shows 100.8 but you have to round to an even number. If that's too long can shorten to 100).

What are the advantages of a 530 chain over a 630.? Knowledge is power.

Lighter weight, equal or greater strength, X and W ring chains have longer life, greater choice of brands and prices.

How do I shop for sprockets? Like how do I know what will fit the bike? Do I look for a bolt pattern or something? I've never ordered these parts before and I want to make sure I order the right ones.

To put it into perspective -
I replaced the original drive chain with a 530 Tsubaki Sigma O-ring chain and replaced both sprockets with stock Kawasaki sprockets on my 1977 KZ650-C1 26,000 miles, 18 years ago. Since then I have needed to adjust the chain a total of about 1/4 inch - practically nothing, and there is zero noticeable wear on the sprockets. I believe the newer Tsubaki Sigma chains are X-ring, and these should in theory last even longer than the O-ring type that I put on my bike. I spray the chain with Maxima Chain Wax and wipe of the excess about every 300 miles. Is the Chain Wax really necessary? I don't know for sure, but since the chain has gone so long with such a tiny amount of stretch I will keep using the Chain Wax. I ride in a rather spirited fashion, so the chain is not babied. I am VERY happy with the Tsubaki chain. Ed

How will I know if a sprocket will mount physically to my bike? Is there a bolt pattern or something to that? When looking at sprockets they don't tell you the bolt pattern but I'm guessing you can't go and buy any ol sprocket and throw it on.

JT Sprockets has good info on sprocket bolt patterns and such. Look up sprockets for your bike in 630 size and then figure out what the 530 equivalents are. Z1 Enterprise is also a good source of info on such matters plus they sell parts for fair prices.

Will an 18T Front fit? It's been a while, but I've read that there isn't much room to fit a much larger Fr sprocket than stock on the KZ650-CSR. I'm pretty sure a 14T 630 would be tight & I think a 17T 530 is about the same size. But I've never done the conversion, so I'm not sure what will work.

My BAD. 18T in front is too big. It's customary to add 3 teeth to the 630 size so a 13T in 630 becomes 16T in 530

Stock is 13T front and 33T rear. Chain is 84 links.
