Radio box dimensions 1980 kz1000p was created by Wildbill
I have been in the search of a radio box for my bike and the only ones I find are on eBay and asking over a grand for them. That’s just crazy. So I am thinking of checking out Bass Pro or Cabelas at there selection of pelican box’s. Does anybody know what the dimensions of the original box size was?
Thanks
Thanks

Have you posted an advertisement in the Wanted section of KZR? There are several members here with police bikes that may have a box they will sell. Maybe even cheaper than fleabay.

Is this a 1980 KZ1000C police bike or a KZ1000P Police? just curious. I couldn't find the radio box in the diagrams.

Not 100% sure. Some websites refer to it as a “c” and others “p”. Not sure what the difference is

The earlier 78-81 police bikes were the KZ1000C models (C1 thru C4). The 1982-on are the KZ1000P (P1 thru P24).

One of the biggest differences is the engine. The C series used the KZ engine (1015cc) and the P series used the later J engine (998cc).

Wildbill: The standard Motorola police radio box in the 70's and on were pretty much all the same size and fit all the major police motorcycle mounting plates. The last time I had to put bids out on a couple they were in the area of $800.00 to departments. The actual size of the box didn't change much over the years. Besides Ebay you may want to check with some law enforcement supply houses where they install equipment on squads and bikes etc. I know we had a few of these boxes in our fleet supply warehouse, but that was 12 years ago and I am sure they were no doubt tossed. Watch department auction lists too as many times they may put this stuff up for auction just to see what happens. You would be surprised where some of this stuff is hiding under a bunch of other unwanted equipment. Also check with some individual departments that run motors as they may have some in their old parts bins. The old Motorola box was tough as nails, but didn't hold much but a radio. The other option is to watch for non-Motorola boxes too because they replaced the old Motorola boxes. Problem is many of those boxes hademergency lights mounted to them and the holes will be present. I'll do a little recon work for you in my travels see if I can find anything. What size is the maximum you would want? If you don't know for sure you can Google up Police Motorcycle Radio Box or Equipment Box and see what you get back.
