Front brake caliper z500 b3 question
12 May 2019 13:48
Hi there Folks,
Attached picture shows the two shafts on the brake pads caseholder for my z500 -81. One of the shafts (marked) seems to be stiff while the other runs smoothly... same on both sides right/left. Supposed to be like that?

One pin on each side has a rubber sleeve on the pin. Mine were stuck and a pain to remove from the pad carrier.

Yes, one slide should have some resistance while the other runs smooth. The resistance one has a rubber sleeve on the shaft like Oldjeep said. Many cars are like that too.

Heavy black moly caliper grease works well for that application.

Re: Front brake caliper z500 b3 question
13 May 2019 03:31 - 13 May 2019 05:50i sprayed pentrating oil around the pins and did a lot of twisting and pulling to get them out. Do not apply heat. I was surprised how difficult they were to remove. But once cleaned up and regreased with high temp caliper grease they move quite well.Swedez500 wrote: Oldjeep:

Maybe someone used the wrong type of lubricant and maybe it had a chemical reaction with the rubber, if it is indeed the rubber that is stuck and not rust. Sometimes it causes the rubber to expand.
The manual calls for PBC Poly Butyl Cuprysil grease on the holder shafts and the "friction boot", which is that rubber sleeve.

Good point. Suzuki GS bikes had the same problem; there was a plastic sleeve around one of the pins that would swell and keep the caliper from sliding properly. I've been using Permatex Silicone Disc Caliper grease without issue but using proper PCB grease might be safer. Nissan sells PCB grease specifically designed for brake parts but it's expensive. If anyone knows of a cheaper alternative please share. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BNVJQDC/ref...=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1

I used this stuff, costs $1.50 a packet - never thought to look at a manual for pin grease ![;) ;)](/media/kunena/emoticons/11.png)

Thanks for the heads up on the Nissan grease. I can use that for the car and KZ... i might look for a smaller package.
I've been using Sil Glyde (Silicone based grease, I think) for decades as it claims to be for this exact application and won't harm rubber. So far it has worked very well but I'd rather use the right stuff. I've googled to see if Sil Glyde is cross compatible with PBC but not any definitive answer yet.
