wheel information needed. 18" mag rear drum? And more
07 Mar 2019 17:51
Hello all. Been away for a while. Lately, I've been daydreaming about fitting a set of the Enkei style mags to a CB550 project I'm working on.
The front is probably the easy one. Maybe a bearing swap to match the axle to the CB forks, a caliper hanger, etc.
But the rear has me thinking...
Honda never made a CB500/550 with rear disc. Was there a KZ550 (or other suitable) rear mag wheel in 18"? If so, what model(s)?
I also considered swapping to rear disc. I've found a GPZ550 rear swing arm and caliper. What size pivot bolt and axle does the KZ/GPz series use? (And while we're at it, can I get the axle size for the front, too?)
Any information, measurements, etc, you can provide would be much appreciated.

Even though I've been searching for days, it seems like I just found some info on the 18" rear drum. The '80-81 KZ550A standard used the 18" drum, right? Is that the only model?
I'd still like some information on front and rear axle sizes and the pivot bolt size. And anything else you can add.

I think there were a few Kawasaki models with 18 inch rear with disc brake. The '79 Z550 was one.
You can check out other models here. www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/bikes/Kawasaki6.html

I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

Sorry...I thought you said disc brake. But there are models with drum as well. My wife's KZ550 LTD is drum but it's 16 inch.

Yeah, the 16" drum is easy to find. And the GPz used an 18" rear disc. It looks like only the '80-81 Standard used the 18" rear drum?
That axle and pivot bolt size would be very helpful, too.

1980 KZ650-F1 in the USA
1980-83 550-A1 thru A4.
I think that's it. Every other cast alloy wheel was either 16" or had a rear disk.
18" Rr alloy wheels with drum seem like they're kind of hard to find.
Since this is a Honda project, you might consider the KZ440B >> but the hub components are smaller than the 550.
