Lower shock bolt
05 Nov 2018 17:19
I have a 1981 kz550. Previous owner installed short shocks and gave me the originals with it. As I was trying to put The Originals on I noticed the lower shock bolt now hits the inside of each exhaust pipe. Is there a reason for this? Do I need to adjust something? The outsides of the Mufflers have no scratches from being dropped. As you can see the muffler bracket nuts aren't even on as it would tighten it further. Thanks

that bolt touched the stock exhaust on both my kz650s. I just bent the bracket a little bit to compensate.

Put some spacers or bend the bracket as below to move the exhausts out a little.

Is there one washer under the bolt head or two? There should be only one.

I'll check to make sure there's only 1 washer and will give each side the "GI Joe With The Kung Fu Grip" to move it out a bit. Thanks!

Probably not the original bolt. My bike has one where the head is quite short, just what you need. My other side doesn't match. I bet a lot of bikes are like that.
Or you could take a grinder to your bolt to make it thinner.
