Front wheel axle spacer going bad? was created by Algoe
While spinning the front wheel there's a slight "click, or clunk" at first I thought it was a bad speedo cable, but I took that out of the equation and it was still there. Then installed a new one. I put new bearings in it a couple months ago aswell.(that's what I thought the noise was), and the spokes are all tight and the wheel is very true. Do the spacers go bad? When I had it out I inspected it a little bit, but didn't think much of it.

Could be the disk brake rotor/caliper/brake pads, something could stuck in there.

Scirocco, I'll remove the caliper and see if that resolves the clunk. But honestly I feel as though its the collar (41039-028). I've just never heard of them "going bad". Could i run the wheel without it? Seems kinda pointless to be honest. The seat for the bearings is pretty large.

Also, i just sold my 81 rabbit diesel. I love old vws. Finding a mint first gen scirocco is on my bucket list.

Also also. Admins extremely sorry about the wrong category placement.

No way!!!! The collar need to be in/between the bearings!!!!
If not installed properly this will squeeze/destroy or lock up your bearing/wheel!!!

off Topic:

This would be very difficult to find a good first gen Scirocco.
I have to seach 5 years for a good rust free in the mid 1990 after my first one was totally destroyed in an accident.

I was a gas station attendant back in the day, saving up money for college, and every time one of those VW's came in I asked if they wanted the oil checked.  About 50% of the time the oil was low, which made my boss happy because we then could sell them an overpriced quart of the stations supply.  Makes me wonder how many of those VW's hit the scrap heap because some neglectful owner ran the engine dry?  At least back in those days "full service" gas stations were still quite common here in the USA, so there was at least a chance that the oil was checked regularly.  At any rate, those were fun cars, but not the most durable.

There is actually a full service  place still running next to my grandparents house in cape cod mass. But durability? That diesel had 210 on her running strong And almost* everything still worked haha the heater cores and door handles were notorious for failure.

Probably not "going bad", but instead, it can get damaged. The collar has a pressed on flange, and if a guy doesn't know what he's doing, the flange can get crushed when driving out the wheel bearings. The collar is needed as it acts as a hub spacer & the flange helps to keep the collar centered when installing the axle.
