1982 KZ440 brake pad fell out..
12 Jun 2018 21:59
Hi all, while I was removing the wheels to put new tires on I accidentally let the front forks drop to the ground (with no wheel). The impact knocked one of the brake pads out.
I have read through the service manual and I only see them note that one pad is held in by a screw.. so am I right to assume the other one (which fell out) is held in by some sort of grease and then the disc keeps it from falling out..?
I don't see any retaining clip etc.. just a pad with some old grease on the back.
thanks!

That stuff you are calling grease is, hopefully, some anti-squeal compound.
If you open the Articles tab above, you will see a link to Service Manuals. There you can download a factory manual for the 440. You will find it very helpful.

Do NOT put grease on your brake pads! To do so will greatly reduce your braking power. Ed

Apply only brake caliper grease & only in the specified areas. Do not get it on the friction surfaces.
I use Permatex Ultra disk brake caliper lube in the little packets & use it for other stuff, such as the brake pedal shaft & control cable ends.
