Replacement Rear Master on 1981 GPz550? was created by chopper1963
I'm afraid my efforts to rebuild and reuse the rear master cylinder on my 1981 GPz550 have come to nothing.

Is there a suitable replacement master that people here have used with good results?

I think that many of the newer replacement masters don't have the line running to the brake res. correctly for this bike?

Rebuilding a MC is no rocket science with the right tools, give it a try.

Did you try installing a new piston kit? If so, what brand & how did the piston bore look? Good with no pitting or light pitting or what?
My Fr Br master cylinder had light pitting and some hard white crusty buildup, so I scraped off the crud, then honed the bore with steel wool wrapped around a bristle brush. I also scraped the crud off the groove where the mc cap fits. no leaks.

Rebuilding a master is easy as long as the bore isn't pitted...but therein lies the rub. When rebuilding my KZ750E, which uses the same rear master as the 550H1, I bought several masters off ebay before finding one that was worth using. Very frustrating. I've seen photos where guys used newer masters and made adapter brackets to make them fit. That may be a better option than buying some used master that is likely to be pitted.

That rear master was a 1-year, 1-model unit.
I don't think I've ever seen a rebuild kit, and the bores out there all seem to be pitted or at least less than shiny.

You can retrofit a Ninja 250 master with a little fabrication.
You can still use the original reservoir. I think the Ninja hose just has to be cut down a bit.

You can also use a rear master from a ZX9R like me with a little fabrication.
