Clutch cable routing

1978 KZ750 Twin. PO had the cable routed on the outside of the frame. Works OK but it appears to me that the cable would be less close to the exhaust if it were routed inside the frame. Thought I would ask before going to the trouble of pulling the cover to re-route. Thanks!

On my 1977 KZ650-C1 the clutch cable came routed on the outside of the frame as shown in the first image below. It is held close to the frame by 2 clamps (see 2nd and 3rd images below). Ed

What the heck are you doing Jim?

Kzsolo, I think that with those straight bars you are going to find the stock cable is a little long for standard routing

Looks like Jim is using the rear axle to pull the alternator off the crank. It is a time-honored method.

Thanks for the input. I am using the stock cable but routing it outside the right headlight ear to take up the added length. This is the third bike I have used drag bars on and it usually takes some creative routing to make the cables work.

Jack, yes using the rear axle (note the adjuster on the floor by the rear tire) to remove the flywheel to rebuild the starter clutch. This was back in 2008.

kzsolo, yes the use of drag bars with the stock cables is possible with creative routing.
