What motorcycle is it and does it have the stock fuel tank & fuel cap? I would investigate the latching mechanism and If possible take it apart & clean it to see what's what. maybe it's full of crud or the problem is the spring? just guessing at this point.

Related. If it still has the original gasket, then you'll probably want to replace that as old rubber becomes hard. Z1Enterprises.com.

Please add your bike's exact year and model to your signature line. Kawasaki made 3 different 1980 KZ750 models (KZ750-E1, KZ750-G1, and KZ750-H1) and they do not all use the same fuel tank cap or other parts. Ed

Thanks - its a 750 Ltd 1980 - I managed to find an image on the net of what the inside gasket looks like on a new replacement - and on checking mine - there is no gasket at all ! - so i have just ordered a couple of rubber sheets I can use to a make new one -
I will also take apart and clean anyway -as will do no harm -

thanks for posting

It's been a while since I've had mine apart, but I seem to recall that there are some tiny parts that could get lost.
