KZ1000 front sprocket. was created by TheTrout
Riding home this morning I had the front sprocket come right off. Feeling lucky for many reasons. Nothing damaged, it fell off right in front of my house, the chain did not go through the side cover, back wheel did not lock up. I removed the side cover to find the sprocket nut and a washer still in there. I thought it would have some kind of washer that got bent up into the nut to keep it from coming off. I checked the diagrams and see nothing like that. So my question is what keeps the nut on? What stops it from backing off again and doing the same thing?

That's what I thought too but it does not show it on the parts diagram, I. We'd to order one, does anyone have the part number?

1. The spline in the counter sprocket prevents it from turning on the shaft.

2. The tab on the washer is inserted into the little hole in the countersprocket and this prevents the washer from turning on the countersprocket.

3. The washer is bent over one or more of the flat sides of the coutersprocket nut. So since the countersprocket cannot turn on the shaft, and the washer cannot turn on the countersprocket, the washer now prevents the nut from turning on the shaft.

The washer on mine that looks just like the one you posted above for my model is not big enough to bent up onto the nut to lock it in place. This pic is with the washer installed

Sounds like you have the wrong washer. Look at page 62 in the first link below. Notice it instructs you to how to install the washer and to bend one side of the washer over the side of the nut. You should use a new washer every time you remove and install the nut. The washers are available at numerous places including eBay; they are part number 92024-044 . See second link below for part number verification. Ed

The diagram doesn't show the small hole in the sprocket where the washer tang fits into.

Here's my understanding:



This doesn't work as a "locking system" with a sprocket that doesn't have a hole for a washer with a tang, because simply using a common flat washer and bending an edge of the washer over the nut still allows both the washer and nut to rotate counter-clockwise together while the nut is loosening.

Relying only on the washer tang inside the sprocket hole without bending an edge of the washer over the nut also doesn't work as a "locking system," because the nut itself is still allowed to loosen by rotating counter-clockwise.

The wrench size of your nut looks bigger than normal.
It could also the outer diameter of the lock washer is to small
That´s why you can´t bent the lock washer.

Eactly! That's my issue. Ordering another wash just like it isn't going to help me. I understand and know everything you guys have said. I get it an agree. That's why this is driving me crazy. Something is just not right. I had my motor rebuilt and got it back last week. I wonder now if they ordered a new one and it is the wrong lock washer the local shop put on there. It sucks because I want to ride! I could try to make one. I am a computer programmer by trade so no machinist here, but I still do pretty good with most things mechanical. The problem for me in trying to make one is making the tang on the washer. To make it work in this case the tang will not be on the edge of the washer, but instead somewhere in the middle. Not sure how I would cut a U-shape to make the tang. It's not like I own some kind of precision plasma cutter. I do have a pretty good set of tools and supplies. If I have to order one and wait it will be another week before I am riding again....and I just got the bike back, it's broke in and ready to ride in a more spirited fashion! Not sure what to do, waiting will suck. I hope my local shop maybe by some chance has one. The shop owner is a big KZ fan and former drag racer, so there is a chance he may have what I need.

The washer part no. 92024-044 looks from the pics like it might be big enough to allow bending against a nut flat.
