upper shock mount was created by PI
Hello,
I'm new to this forum, I have just finished dismantleing my 1977 KZ1000 LTD down to the frame. I'm looking at the upper shock mounts, they look like they would come off the frame as the footrest studs do. looking at the parts book but they don't show a part number or that they even come off. my question is can they come off and where can I fined new ones?

NO GO! Those studs are welded in place. You can modify them. I have done this on an old project. I cut the stud off flush.
I made a jig to drill a hole in stud. 1 side is 14mm that slips over stud. And the opposite side is a 5/16" hole for a drill bit.
This way the drill goes in straight. all the way through is about 2 inches. I just drilled and tapped a 3/8" thread in. I did not go all the way through. I have a bunch of flat heads on this old bike Countersunk in these aluminum struts. But you would need a machinist to help you. A nice quality drill bit or 2 and a good high torque drill. The frame metal is soft enough. couple pics from phone.
Anything can be built or modified!
Good luck.

Thank you for your quick response. My upper shock mount stud is in good shape it just has some rust on it. I am going to have the frame glass beeded and powder coated. I'm not going to powder coat the stud and threads but I want to protect the metal from further corrosion. Any suggestions on how to prepare the metal stud.
