Wheel Runout Measured

Jacked my front end up in the air on my 77' KZ1000A and measured the front wheel axial runout the best I could. Used a stationary block along side of the wheel with a pointer. Placed the pointer against wheel to where it barely touched then rotated the wheel slowly. With feeler gauges stacked the best I could measure was .094" or 2.4mm. Within the 3.0mm FSM spec but more than what I would like to see.

Can I tighten spokes on the wheel to pull the wheel in or decrease the run-out ? Which side of the wheel or spokes would you have to tighten or loosen?

Do you notice the run out when riding the bike? If not, leave it alone. You can "true" the wheel by loosening/tightening the appropriate spokes. You can also make it far worse. If these are the original rims, there's a good chance the nipples will be corroded and froze. You really should start with removing the tire and soaking the spoke threads with a penetrating oil from the inside of the rim. Truing is not rocket science. Loosen the spokes on the opposite side (in relation to the hub) where the run out is highest and tighten the spokes on the same side to pull the run out closed. Work in small increments, no more than 1/2 turn at a time.
Besides a spoke wrench, you may want to invest in a cheap dial gauge and holder. HF has a them for under $20.00. Measuring run out with a fixed pointer and feeler gauges is going to be time consuming and not very accurate

MDZ1rider, I like your set-up . Dial you purchase Both Dial gauge and wheel balance stand at Harbor Freight ? I didn't see at HF if they had a gauge holder/magnet ?

It's all from Harbor Freight. Some people are tool snobs and wouldn't buy anything HF. It's good enough for non-professional use and the price is hard beat. The little colored dots on the stand are magnets for a dry-erase board. I use them to mark the spots that need adjusting. It also works a balancing stand.

Just got thru riding the KZ for about 60 miles. To be honest, I really can't tell if the run-out that i'm seeing on the wheel is affecting the riding at all ?

But then again, maybe I don't know what to look for ?
