My '83 1100 Spectre has a really bouncy speedo needle, maybe 10 mph bounce even at low speeds. Is this something I can fix myself? Guessing I will have to peel open the speedo case crimp, but what has gone wrong inside is what i'm wondering. I know some guys on here send theirs in to have this sort of work done, and if it's not a simple fix then I can do that. Some sort of needle damper that has gotten old or something I'm guessing....

Yes it has a cable, it's the speedo, not the tach. The cable is new and I oiled it before installation.

Did the bouncing start when you installed the new cable? If so, it could be a poorly made cable.

Yes, twist the cable back and forth to see if there is any give. There should be nine.

No there's nothing wrong with the cable, it did it exactly the same with the old one. So is this something I can fix myself, and if so, what part internally is dead? Thanks.

It may be just worn out. Did you read my thread?

Well it has 31K miles on it, and is 33 years old. but it does work, just the needle bounces. I read your thread, you didn't fix it yourself, you sent them into someone else. But again, the question is, is this something I can fix myself??

Yes probably

But 99 percent of the time thw cable is binding up and then releasing tension inside the cable housing. It doesnt mean you did anything wrong installing , it . I have had this happen before

Thank you Dave, I'll recheck the cable, but looks like nobody had tried to fix their speedo, so if the cable checks out,I will be the first I guess.

I've had a number of them apart. If they're worn out, that's it. My new speedo is wagging a little but it may be the cable. I'll be getting a tach from another model bike for parts. I may do that with my speedo as well or send it out.
