Ninja 900 gpz rear tyre question was created by shamal
Hi all. I just need to know if a zx900a (first series) can take a 160/60/18 rear tyre on the stock rim without interference. I did a search but i cant find nothing clear :/
Thank you mates!!!

I have a GPZ900R rear wheel on my Z1R, 1986 I think (3.5" x 18" rim) and the maximum size I would use is 140/80. If using anything bigger the tyre will only grow in diameter and cause the bike to not handle well.

First Permanent ride the Z1R since Dec1977 (220,000km) as of June 2015
Second permanent bike 1989 FJ1200 dyno'd 140RWH, great bike.
Third ride is now the Frankenstein 1981 GPZ1100B1, 1983 fully recon motor fitted LOVE THIS BIKE
Forth my work bike FJ1200 1989 (same type as FJ above)

After initially having the 130 the bike handled very well and the tyre looked comfortable on the rim. The 140 doesn't look wider than the 130 but it has grown in diameter (see photo, looks more like a 140/80 than a 140/70) and to be honest the 140 doesn't look as good. I would say the if you went to 150 you'll find the tyre will be less stable (although the zx900r would not feel this) and it won't look wider than the 140.

The other thing I found is that when cornering (the photo has chicken strips because the tyre was new) I can lean the 130 to the edge with no drama but the 140 (same tyre type) lets go a bit and doesn't go to the edge.

If you are doing this to make your tyre look wider, the best choice is to go for a wider rim 4 to 4.5 from the later model zx900R (I don't know how they would fit, check the zx900R forum)
Good luck.
