Should I replace this tire?
22 Aug 2016 17:17
My 2 year old front Kenda tire has been leaking air. The leak is getting worse so I sprayed the tire with soapy water. I fixed one rim leak but in the process caused another rim leak, far worse.
When I mounted this tire I used PB Blaster as lube and cleaned the bead area of corrosion. I specifically did not use soapy water to prevent future corrosion. Anyways 2 years later this wheel's bead area looks terrible. Corrosion everywhere. How can this happen?
I attempted to remove the tire and found this - a hole or flaw in the tire that bubbles up even with the tire bead broken (no air pressure in the tire)
In case the picture is unclear, the arrow is pointing to the leak. It is in the bead area of the tire.
Do i need to replace this tire?

I wouldn't use a penetrant to mount a tire as the chemicals might attack the rubber. ???

Right on. The risk you are taking with that hole enlarging and/or a pressure drop as you ride is just not worth the chance.

I figured I should replace the tire, just wanted some more experienced opinions than mine.
Should I use black tire sealant on the rim?

If 1) the rim is clean and true and 2) the tire is clean and not deformed you should not need any sealant at all. If you still think you need sealant, go back and confirm that 1) and 2) are true.
And as martin_csr mentioned, do not use a penetrating fluid like PB Blaster to mount a tire.

Would an aerosol silicon spray work as tire lubricant?

If you're concerned about corrosion, keep in mind that what's already there is from 30+ yrs of time. I would use a tire lubricant or soapy soapy water (Dawn dish soap). I guess silicone spray lube would be okay for mounting tires as it tends to evaporate. I don't think it would hurt & it probably wouldn't have time to attack the rubber anyway. I use Liquid Wrench silicone spray lubricant to clean a lot of stuff on the bike, but I use Ru-Glyde to mount tires.

Put in a tube and a rim strip? Cheaper than a new tire.

Regarding the silicone it shouldn't be used to mount a tire.
I once went to a tireshop with new set of 4 tires to mount on a car, i previously treated them with maguiris tyre gel, which is very slippery silicone. The tireshop turned me away, they didn't want to install these tires because the edge of the rubber which seals the rim must have grip. Otherwise when braking the tire would spin on a rim and the car wouldn't stop.
So i had to clean all silicone with a paint thinner. The shops do use special mounting pastes, but i guess it has some different characteristics then silicone.
