Z1 braking improvement

I am starting to use my Z1 to commute to work and I cannot say that I am impressed with the front brake. I was wondering if there was a modern front caliper I could use (and MC if necessary) that would improve matters. For my H1 I fitted an EX500 front caliper with a custom mounting bracket and that did a wonderful job of stopping the beast. Is there a common swap or am I looking at adding another disk and caliper? I would rather not go down that road as it only adds weight but she is a fat pig anyway.

I have duel disks and H2 calipers. I can lock up the front wheel if I want to. Tire selection makes a difference too.

I think I read on a post on here from 5 yrs ago, that 85-86 GPZ 900 calipers will bolt right up on Z1 900 fork legs, I don't know if you would a need spacer for the rotor though

The EX brake swap will work on the Z1 fork legs. The members here really don't do that swap, my 80 ltd has twin ex calipers on it, much improved over the stock setup.
Ja-moo's setup works on the z1 forks (should be same spacing as H2 calipers) the kz fork legs require welding extra material to the caliper bracket

Any links to that stuff? I'm looking for some sort of bolt-on mod myself keeping the original wheel and forks.
And yeah, the massive rotor probably creates more momentum than braking. lol

Perfect!! I really don't want to add any more mass to the front wheel so an EX conversion is the solution. Stupidly I sold a twin disk EX conversion with cut down disks to the Kawi2Stroke.com guys a couple of years.....

Just picked up a complete EX500 brake assembly off ebay for $25 shipped. Jim at Lake Services has the bracket for $15 so I shot him an email to order one of those as well. Could be in business for less than $50

Sounds like you're committed to the conversion already. Did you try optimizing the stock system? Metallic pads and Braided SS lines will make a noticeable improvement to the OEM system.

When it comes to an aging stock system you end up looking at $50+ for a new piston $50 for a seal kit, a master cylinder rebuild kit (never bought or priced one, so no clue.) pads, and brake lines for optimizing things.
The ex250/500/600 caliper is STILL in use today on the smaller kawis, making them a breeze to get (for a left and a right caliper I paid $35 bucks) bought a matching master for $40, and two new brake lines for $40, all in all I have a more modern, upgraded brake system for under $150, although like I stated, on the kz models you have to relocate the mounting holes, no big deal, a couple hours with a MIG to sort it out.
