kz1100 final drive repair

So the final drive on my 82 kz1100A2 Shafty has decided it wants to try to kill me by leaking the gear fluid on to the rear tire. Has anyone ever changed the seals on these? Should I just get a new/different one? Give it to the shop and let them fix it? How involved is it? Thanks.

For the cost to replace one seal, you may find an entire low-mile unit on ebay, with no leaks. Removing the old unit will be necessary regardless, so the choice is a no brainer IMO. :)

Well, after I got the rear wheel off and cleaning everything up, I discovered that the large outside seal had just gone bad. So I went to the bike shop and ordered a new one, along with the drain plug crush washer. While I had everything apart, I took the rear brake hose down to Empire Radiator, where they made up a new red braided line. The old seal was a little tuff to get out, but taking my time I got it free, cleaned up the area, and installed the new seal. Got everything put back together, filled up the unit with some vintage 1987 Kendall 80w90 Special Limited Slip gear oil that I had (brand new sitting on a shelf for 30 years) fired it up and did a running test while it was up on the center stand. No leaks!!! I let it sit overnight, checked it again,No Leaks!!! I did a 30 min test drive around town and no leaks!!! So for about $30 for the seal and washer, I'm back in business. Yea me!
